Volcano Classic Onyx Vaporizer Review

Is it too basic or is that its strength?

Storz + Bickel’s Onyx Volcano Classic is legendary among desktop vaporizers. In a crowded market increasingly full of features, the Volcano has stood the test of time and continues to be a top seller. Given the hefty price tag on even the most basic models of the Volcano, it’s clear that it is designed well.

The Classic version of the unit features very basic controls that users may find polarizing. Some may enjoy the ease of use, and others may want more features. Certainly, there are cheaper vaporizers on the market that are fully featured, so what makes the Volcano stand out? It would be easy enough to say “Quality” and move on; however, here is a deeper look into what it takes to become a “Classic.”

Advantages

Convection Heating:

By employing convection heating, the Volcano ensures that the input material never comes into direct contact with the heating element, greatly minimizing the risk of combustion when used correctly. The Volcano’s meticulously crafted design and unmatched vapor production contribute to an unparalleled vaporization experience. The heating block is constructed using food-safe aluminum, while the high-quality heating element guarantees that each session yields remarkably pure and potent vapor.

Safety:

Storz & Bickel stands out in the industry due to its stringent testing and certification procedures. Their vaporizers are meticulously designed and manufactured in Germany, employing an aluminum heat exchanger. A study has confirmed that no traces of aluminum seep into the vapor.

The “Classic” model has attained the esteemed status of a medical-grade product following twelve years of meticulous research and development. To meet the necessary standards for medical purposes, the manufacturer has implemented comprehensive quality management systems (ISO 13485) and utilized premium materials.

Furthermore, the Volcano has obtained electrical certifications (DIN EN ISO 60 335) and successfully passed rigorous tests and certifications conducted by TÜV SÜD (Southern Technical Inspection Association) in Munich, Germany.

Simplicity:

For consumers who are tired of everything in their life being internet-connected and app-controlled, the “Classic” offers a refreshingly simple approach to design. With just an on switch, a fan switch and a temperature knob the entire function of the Volcano is easily realized. It’s hard to break and easy for the non-tech savvy.

Fun Color:

The Onyx version of the volcano looks great in a modern home. It can blend in more easily with other electronics. The finish quality Storz + Bickel achieves is phenomenal.

Drawbacks

Price:

While the Volcano may be widely regarded as perhaps the best desktop vaporizer of all time, it comes with a hefty price tag. Depending on the model, customers can expect to pay between $479 and nearly $700 dollars to get into a unit. This particular unit is ONYX is on the cheaper side, however, as mentioned, it is slim on features available in competitors that will be looked at below.

Lack of Features:

Another drawback to the “Classic” trim level of the Volcano is the lack of a digital temperature readout. Instead, users are left with an analog dial that can be cranked hot enough to combust. The more expensive version the “ Hybrid” has a much easier to read and understand display. For some, the LED display on the “Hybrid” is just another part to break, and they might prefer the all analog experience of the “Classic”

Competitors

Probably the best competitor to the Volcano Classic are the desktop offerings from Arizer. Arizer units offer more features at less price. Any version of the Arizer desktop units has more features and comes with a remote. With its sleek metal black cover, the Arizer XQ2 exudes a sense of elegance similar to the Volcano in Onyx.

Furthermore, the XQ2 offers versatile usage options, allowing users to opt for either balloon or direct vapor delivery. Additionally, it includes a whip attachment, granting users the flexibility to connect it to their preferred glassware, thereby elevating the overall vaporizing experience.

The build quality and overall presumed longevity of the Volcano is however better overall than the Arizer offerings.
